After his beloved mother died suddenly in a car accident, Simon Porte Jacquemus dropped out of school at École Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode and started his own fashion label. At the time, he was just 19 years old. To finance his first collections, Jacquemus worked as a sales assistant at the Comme des Garçons store on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. He paid curtain-makers to sew his designs and staged a fake protest outside of Dior, so his pieces could be viewed by the public. By 2012, only three years after he had started, Jacquemus worked his way into the Paris Fashion Week schedule, making him one of the youngest designers to ever do so.
Inspired by his mom’s sense of style (Jacquemus was her maiden name) and his barefoot country upbringing (he was born in the village of Mallemort, where his family continues to live and farm), all of Jacquemus’s designs are inventive and playful. Through his brand, Jacquemus (nicknamed Mr. Sun as a child) aims to celebrate the simple pleasures of life.
One of those simple pleasures: buying a bag not because it is functional, but because it is cute and makes you feel happy. In his Fall 2017 Ready-to-Wear show, Jacquemus debuted Le Chiquito. A mini bag, it is large enough to fit a couple of credit cards, small key ring, and tube of lipstick (but definitely not an iPhone). Measuring at just two and a half inches tall and four wide and costing $522, many doubted it would sell. However, upon its release, the Jacquemus bag was immediately embraced by some of the most influential A-listers, including Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and Beyoncé. Following its success, Jacquemus shrunk it to even smaller proportions for Fall/Winter 2019. Appropriately named Le Petit Chiquito, it is a mere two inches tall and wide. Though it is a bit more affordably priced at $258, the new model is only large enough to fit one (!) AirPod or a handful of Tic Tacs. However, accompanied by a long strap, Le Petit Chiquito is more versatile; it can be carried as a traditional crossbody bag and styled as a belt, necklace, or bracelet.
If Jacquemus’s two most popular micro models have not convinced you to leave all your baggage behind, it also offers a range of others. Among them: a larger Le Chiquito (the Grand), straw bags (Le Baci and, most recently, Le Panier Soleil), traditional lavender sacs (Le Pochon Lavande), and net shoppers (Le Sac Filet).
Accounting for over 30% of its revenue, Jacquemus’s bags are its most popular pieces. There is no doubt Jacquemus will continue to play with scale and design carefree silhouettes.
